Aleksandr Vasil'evich SHevchenko
Avant-garde artist Alexander Vasilyevich Shevchenko (1883 - 1948) was a Russian and Soviet painter and graphic artist, art theorist, avant—gardist.

Being in the thick of the struggle for new forms in art in the 1910s, Shevchenko was the most traditional among other artists. Larionov, assessing Shevchenko's painting, wrote that his "cubist, futurist and radiant forms are introduced into a picture strictly academically constructed." The new forms attracted Shevchenko not only and not so much as an artist-practitioner, but as a researcher and experimenter. Most of all, he was passionate about neo-primitivism. In search of the plastic unity of form in the early 1920s, Shevchenko turned to the work of Paul Cezanne.

In his works of this time, one can find direct analogies with the works of the French master. In painting and graphics of the 1930s, especially those related to the Caucasian theme, there are tendencies towards greater monumentality with simplicity of motive, greater emotionality of color, lyricism, romantic interpretation of the landscape. In the 1940s he created landscapes and genres in the spirit of "quiet art".The artist's work is represented in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
